Dyess Air Force Base

Abilene, TX

Dyess AFB hosts the 7th Bomb Wing flying the B-1B Lancer and the 317th Airlift Wing flying the C-130J Super Hercules — one of the few bases pairing a bomber wing with a tactical airlift wing. It sits on the western edge of Abilene.

Fort Bliss

El Paso, TX

Fort Bliss is a major armor and air defense installation on the West Texas/New Mexico border, home to the 1st Armored Division and significant Army air and missile defense units. Its training ranges extend into White Sands Missile Range airspace.

Fort Hood

Killeen, TX

Fort Hood is one of the Army's largest armor and mechanized installations, home to III Armored Corps and the 1st Cavalry Division. It was renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 honoring Gen. Richard Cavazos, then redesignated back to Fort Hood in 2025.

Goodfellow Air Force Base

San Angelo, TX

Goodfellow AFB is a technical training base run by the 17th Training Wing, teaching intelligence, fire protection, and cryptologic/linguist career fields to all four services, not just the Air Force. It's a joint-service schoolhouse in practice even though it isn't formally a joint base.

Joint Base San Antonio

San Antonio, TX

Joint Base San Antonio combines Lackland AFB (basic military training and technical schools), Randolph AFB (pilot and instructor training, Air Education and Training Command headquarters), and Army Fort Sam Houston (medical training) into one of the Air Force's largest joint installations. Nearly every enlisted Air Force member passes through Lackland's Basic Military Training.

Laughlin AFB is an undergraduate pilot training base run by the 47th Flying Training Wing, flying the T-6 Texan II, T-38 Talon, and T-1 Jayhawk. It's one of the busiest UPT schoolhouses in the Air Force.

NAS Kingsville is a jet strike-training base under the Chief of Naval Air Training, running T-45 Goshawk training for student naval aviators headed to the strike-fighter community.

Sheppard Air Force Base

Wichita Falls, TX

Sheppard AFB is home to the 82nd Training Wing, one of the Air Force's largest technical training centers, and the 80th Flying Training Wing, which runs the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program with partner-nation student pilots. It's a unique mix of enlisted tech school and multinational pilot training.
