Known as the 'Home of the Submarine Force,' NSB New London hosts Submarine Squadrons and the Naval Submarine School, where nearly every submariner in the fleet trains at some point. Electric Boat's Groton shipyard sits right next door, building and overhauling the Navy's attack and ballistic-missile submarines.

The Coast Guard Academy is the service's officer commissioning college, comparable to the other services' service academies, situated on the Thames River in New London. It's one of the smallest of the U.S. federal service academies.
